When the national park was founded in 1986, the Wadden Sea was not an uninhabited area. Both farmers and fishermen have been living and working here for centuries. Tourism has been a part of life for almost 200 years. With 24 Mio. overnight-stays, Lower Saxony’s coastal area is one of the top tourist destinations in Germany.

To minimize the impact of tourism and economy in the area, quite a bit of lobbying on behalf of nature was and still is necessary. An important part is played by the 14 information centers of the Wadden Sea National Park of Lower Saxony. One of them is situated on Norderney.

Here, we want to inspire not only an interest for the beauty of the Wadden Sea but also for its characteristics and uniqueness in both visitors and locals. An emphasis is put on the necessity of nature conservation in the area. To support this effort we explain the approach, the national park administration takes to accomplish this, for example by means of the zonation-concept.

Above all we see our task in educating the public and would like to show each guest how he or she can personally support the conservation of this unique landscape.
